The controller uses one rotatable fiber squeezer and two fiber clamps. Mechanical pressure induces stress birefringence in single-mode (SM) fiber, creating a variable rotatable waveplate. Its polarization angle and retardation can be adjusted continuously and independently to achieve the target output polarization.

Technical Notes

The controller includes one rotatable fiber squeezer and two fiber clamps. Stress birefringence is induced in SM fiber via mechanical squeezing, acting as a variable rotatable waveplate. Polarization angle and retardation are independently adjustable to convert any input polarization to the desired output.

Fiber can be directly clamped into the device, supporting Ø250 µm bare fiber or Ø900 µm tight buffered fiber. No connector removal or tools are required for installation.

Installation Steps

Loosen and open the two fiber clamps.

Turn the squeezer knob to open the fiber groove.

Tilt the squeezer to align the groove with the clamps.

Place the fiber fully into the groove to avoid damage.

Tilt the squeezer to control polarization.

Use the side locking knob to fix the tilt angle.

The base features 4× M6 countersink holes and 2× 30.6×10.3 mm slots for mounting on optical breadboards or tables.
