Optical Knowledge Point: Common Optical Thread Size Standards

This is a thread specific to Thorlabs Inc. (USA) and not a commonly used optical thread. “SM” is the code for sewing machine threads in thread notation, but this American company uses it for internal and external thread connections of optical lenses and sleeves. The thread type is UNS (Unified National Special Thread) with a tolerance class of 2A/2B. A unique feature of this thread is that regardless of the diameter, the pitch is 40 threads per inch (TPI). Product Description

The MC-1 series is ideal for mounting mirrors or collimated light sources, enabling precise beam angle alignment along the axis of 30mm cage systems. The mount is equipped with three M6*0.25 precision hex adjusters with an adjustment accuracy of 7 mrad/rev (milliradians per revolution). The fine adjustment of the manual three-axis adjusters allows for accurate angular positioning of optical components within the cage system. Additionally, each adjuster has a separate locking set screw.

The MC-S1 optical adjustment mount features a smooth limit mounting hole for Ø1-inch optical components with a thickness of at least 3mm, which are fixed via nylon-tipped set screws on the top.

The MC-T1 has an SM1 (1.035”-40) threaded mounting hole and can directly mount optical components up to 3.1mm thick using the included 2 SM1 retaining rings. Thicker optical components can be installed via our SM1 series lens sleeves, which are then screwed into the front plate of the adjustment mount.

Both the front and rear plates are equipped with four pre-designed through holes, directly compatible with our 30mm cage systems. The front plate of the cage rod allows ±4° yaw and tilt adjustment without interfering with the cage rod. Once the desired position is achieved, the cage rod can be fixed using the locking set screws on the rear plate. In addition to compatibility with 30mm cage systems, it can also be connected to rods via M4 threaded holes.

 

With a laser mounting hole or adjustable collimation adapter, a Ø12mm laser can be installed on the adjustment mount. Note: The non-threaded MC-S1 is used with the POL-12 laser mounting hole. The threaded MC-T1 is used with the OAD-12F adjustable collimation adapter.
